When the respected critic Neal Martin tasted this for Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate he tried to put it in context to the other First Growths: “I noticed that it has slightly more intensity than the Lafite-Rothschild a touch of menthol infusing the black fruit certainly more exotic than the Lafite or Mouton with that subtle hint of black olive. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. There is good muscle and weight to this Latour with impressive tension and energy on the saline finish. It will drink well over the next 15 years possibly longer.” Robert Parker himself noted that this is “Undoubtedly one of the longest-lived wines of the vintage.” Any wine that outperforms Lafite and Mouton and has a predicted drinking window running for a couple of decades up to 2030 is certainly an intriguing one.

Château Latour – which has been described by Neal Martin as “a supernova around which others orbit” – is the classic First Growth and 2007 is a particularly fascinating vintage because it included the highest proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon ever included in the blend. It was also the first wine made in Latour’s newly renovated cellars. That makes this a unique red and a must-try for any serious connoisseur.

Château Latour is not a wine that should be consumed too young it often needs a decade or more to reach its true potential as this one has. Fabulously focused and surprisingly youthful the 2007 displays Pauillac’s classic pencil lead lots of freshness and all that soave showmanship that Latour is famed for. A fine choice when guests need to be impressed!
