Grand Vin Saint-Julien 2011
94 points, “One of the stars of the vintage.” – Robert Parker
The very much in-form Château Léoville-Poyferré should be firmly on the radar of any Bordeaux lover. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc is bursting with cassis, cedar, blackberries, black cherries, burnt orange peel, chocolate and freshly ground coffee. A masterclass in precision, it has plenty of finesse, and would pair beautifully with steak, duck confit, venison casserole, stuffed cabbage leaves or savoury pies.
Releasing a string of exceptional wines since 2000 under the watchful eye of Didier Cuvelier, Château Léoville-Poyferré is often lauded by respected critics as being one of the most consistent producers in all of Bordeaux. In Neal Martin’s view, what they create is “wine for lovers of modern, stylish Claret… for the oenophile, not the profit-hunter”, i.e. great wine to drink rather than buying for investment purposes.
