According to the wine press, Château Maris is “one of the five most environmentally friendly wineries in the world”. This sustainable enterprise in the heart of Minervois was purchased by British ex-pat Robert Eden in the late-90s, and not only is it organic and biodynamic, but the gravity-fed winery is built from hemp bricks that absorb excess CO₂ and they use only natural pesticides and fertilisers. Grapes are handpicked; plots are ploughed by workhorses; barley, bulgur and mustard are grown between the vines to enrich the soil and strengthen the vines; and Chateau Maris is a B Corp, which means they’re a company that puts people and the planet before profit. The quality of their terroir-driven wines far exceeds their rather humble prices.
