Château Musar 1999
18.5 points, “Already gorgeous but there are tannins behind the exotic fruit and brilliant freshness.” – Jancis Robinson
An exceptional vintage from Château Musar. Imagine a mature Burgundy blended with a young Corbières in a spice-filled bazaar. Swirling it around a large glass you’re met with cherries, cassis, vanilla chocolate truffles, marmalade, herbes de Provence, violets, mint tea, baked fruits and hot cross buns. An absolute delight and remarkably youthful, despite now being in its twenties. Part of the fun of Château Musar, and particularly older vintages such as this, is to drink it on its own and revel in its intricate character. However, if you wish to serve it with food, think game, roasts and slow-cooked depth of flavour.
The Hochar family’s wine is quite simply an icon. This is the Middle East’s Château Latour. Located in Ghazir, just north of the Lebanese capital Beirut, the grapes are grown in the Bekaa Valley. Despite always being a blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan, as Jancis Robinson so aptly puts it, “The Musar red style is hard to pin down.” That’s because Lebanon’s top producer believes that rather than manipulating the wine into a consistent style, the grapes should sing the song of the vintage. So one year it can taste like a Bordeaux, the next like a great Rhône, and sometimes even like a Burgundy. Throw into the mix a little feral Brettanomyces funk, some bottle variation and a substantial ability to age, and you have a truly unique wine that offers a totally new experience with every cork you pull.
