Alba Rosé 2019
Alba means “dawn” in the ancient Occitan language of southern France. The name isn’t suggesting that this is “breakfast rosé”, it’s a reference to the time of day that the grapes were actually picked – chosen to retain the crisp freshness of the morning. However, if you choose to start your day with this delectable and refreshing wine, there will certainly be no judgement on our part. Maybe with Eggs Royale?
Exclusive to Harvey Nichols, the invigorating Alba Rosé was created by Château Ollieux Romanis, who also make our very own rosé. It has taken them four years to perfect this beauty, but it was worth the wait, and this is fast becoming our new summer favourite. Grenache and Cinsault grapes are handpicked at the first light of dawn from the old vines of the Boutenac region, some of which are up to 70 years old. These old vines produce complex grapes with immense depth of flavour.
Delicate, mineral and elegant, but with a vivacious and almost contagious energy, Alba Rosé feels like running through morning dew barefoot. Ageing on the lees – the spent yeast – has imparted a creaminess to the blossom, wild strawberry and pink grapefruit flavours, which makes this a very gastronomic rosé. We particularly enjoy it with poached salmon and buttery new potatoes, goats’ cheese sprinkled with pink peppercorns, ceviche, barbequed shrimp, strawberry salsa, picnics and sunshine.
Located in the heart of Boutenac, one of the best sub-regions of Corbières, Château Ollieux Romanis farm all of their vineyards organically and sustainably. The estate has been in Pierre Bories’ family for over 150 years, but wines have been produced in the region since Roman times. In recent years they have moved towards a more natural wine approach, focussing on indigenous yeasts, minimal sulphur and organic compost made from leftover grape skins, to allow their exceptional terroir to really shine.
