Grand Vin Haut-Médoc 2015 - Chateau Sociando-Mallet

Chateau Sociando-Mallet

Grand Vin Haut-Médoc 2015

“This is outstanding even by Sociando’s high standards.” – Decanter Magazine

“One of the standouts of the vintage, the 2015 Sociando-Mallet is all finesse. Light on its feet, gracious and super-expressive, the 2015 speaks to class above all else.” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous

“This is a terrific wine.” – Matthew Jukes

It seems that the critics have spoken. 2015 was a fabulous vintage in Bordeaux. Perennial favourite Château Sociando-Mallet certainly seems to have made hay while the sun shone on Haut-Médoc. Polished and pretty, their Grand Vin seems to build in the glass before erupting with wild berries, liqueur soaked black cherries, graphite, toasted spices and fresh flowers. All that concentrated new oak is screaming out for a big steak or a hearty stew.

Jean Gautreau, a négociant from Lesparre, was scouring Bordeaux’s Left Bank for a wine estate to buy on behalf of a Belgian client. However, when he discovered the derelict Château Sociando-Mallet in 1969, he fell in love with it and its dramatic views of the Gironde instantly. Buying it for 250,000 Francs, he lovingly raised it from the rubble and 5 hectares of vines it was then, into the gleaming 83 hectare powerhouse that it is now. Today, it rubs shoulders with the classed growths in quality, demand and price at La Place, and has been described by Robert Parker as “one of Bordeaux’s greatest over-achievers.”
