Grand Vin Haut-Médoc 2001
93 points, “It tastes more like a First Growth than an unclassified offering… This massive, atypical 2001 must be tasted to be believed. A brilliant achievement.” - Robert Parker, Wind Advocate
93 Points, “This is certainly one of the most elegant Sociando-Mallets. Enjoy it over the next decade.” – Neal Martin, Vinous
It seemed like a tough job to create the follow-up to the blockbuster 2000, but this Left Bank estate smashed it out of the park. Perennial favourite Château Sociando-Mallet created a classic in Haut-Médoc, one that in Robert Parker’s opinion tastes like a First Growth. With blackberries, blackcurrants, raspberries, pencil shavings, cigar boxes, sandalwood, English garden herbs and Chinese five spice, this wine is the gift that will keep on giving for many years.
Jean Gautreau, a négociant from Lesparre, was scouring Bordeaux’s Left Bank for a wine estate to buy on behalf of a Belgian client. However, when he discovered the derelict Château Sociando-Mallet in 1969, he fell in love with it and its dramatic views of the Gironde instantly. Buying it for 250,000 Francs, he lovingly raised it from the rubble and 5 hectares of vines it was then, into the gleaming 83 hectare powerhouse that it is now. Today, it rubs shoulders with the classed growths in quality, demand and price at La Place, and has been described by Robert Parker as “one of Bordeaux’s greatest over-achievers.”£13 per 100.00ml
