Côtes de Provence Rosé 2018
Clos Sainte Magdeleine is probably the most beautiful wine estate on Earth. A bright yellow Art Deco villa and organic vineyard perched on a private cape overlooking the turquoise Bay of Cassis. To the right, the old fishing village and to the left, the towering Cap Canaille – France’s highest coastal cliff.
A stunning fishing port on the Mediterranean, Cassis is home to 14 producers who cultivate 180 hectares of vines in an appellation which is gradually shrinking due to real estate pressures. Clos Sainte Magdeleine has belonged to the family of Madame Sack since 1922 and covers over 20 hectares facing the Mediterranean Sea. Their brand new Côtes de Provence Rosé comes from a coastal vineyard just around the headland between Cassis and Bandol.
What you’ve discovered here is a unique style of rosé, not quite Provence, not quite Bandol, but somewhere in between the delicacy and the power of those two. Coral pink with aromas of meadow flowers, herbes de Provence, wild berries, pink grapefruit zest, a salt twang from its proximity to the Mediterranean, and strawberry jelly sweets covered in sugar. Just off-dry, this wine pairs wonderfully with spicy food, but its fresh acidity also makes it an ideal match for Provençal lamb, bouillabaisse or gnocchi with pesto. As most of this rosé is sold locally, few in the UK get the opportunity to taste it.
