97 points “A blend of Merlot Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon from Gimblett Gravels. Supremely elegant wine with an array of dark berry and spice flavours. A youthful wine from a top vintage and with masses of cellaring potential. This really is a classic.” – Bob Campbell MW

96 points “Deep hues of purple and ruby with a complex and inviting bouquet of blackcurrant and cassis blackberry and spiced dark plums smoky spicy barrel scents and concentrated violet and stony soils back bone. On the palate - very youthful and with excellent potential a wine that needs cellar time to bring all the attributes together. A firm texture from fruit and wood tannins plenty of fresh wood with spices and nut flavours clove and toast. The core of this wine is the concentration of fruit flavours - all reflecting the bouquet and leading to a lengthy finish. This wine needs time and will reward those who can wait. Best drinking from 2025 through 2035+. Decant for service before then and enjoy with food.” – Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier

Sophia is the kind of refined and elegant blend of Merlot Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon that has the famous names of Bordeaux quaking in their boots. ‘Sophia’ means ‘wisdom’ in Greek mythology and this wine would appear to be a very wise investment judging by the reviews from the critics especially in a slow-ageing magnum. Craggy Range describe the vintage conditions in 2019 as “iconic” making this red from their Prestige Collection simply unmissable. Expect heady aromas of blueberry muffin cinnamon bun and fresh herbs followed by a silky wave of ripe black berries and a seemingly endless finish. Consider pairing with roasted greens slow-cooked beef or hearty stews.

Terry Peabody’s wife and daughter convinced him to establish a family wine business in the 1990s. After travelling the world in search of the perfect spot he settled on Gimblett Gravels in Hawke’s Bay New Zealand. This spot was chosen because of his love of big reds particularly Syrah and Bordeaux. Today Craggy Range is one of New Zealand’s most prestigious and highly awarded wine producers boasting an enviable portfolio spanning various varieties and regions. What unites them is world-class winemaking uncompromising attention to detail and technical excellence. Craggy Range is a member of the New Zealand Fine Wine Classification and were crowned New Zealand Winery of the Year in 2017 by leading wine writer Bob Campbell MW.
