99 points “Dense intense and complex Syrah that combines power and finesse. A deep dark wine with a heady perfume and dark berry plum violet and pepper-spice flavours. Clearly a wine worth cellaring although it is deliciously drinkable now.” – Bob Campbell MW

96 points “A very distinctive bouquet with a concentration of blackcurrant and dark raspberry scents new barrel with toast and smoke clove and baked vanilla pod moments of anise and liquorice. Complex and youthful enticing and spicy. On the palate - a complex wine with flavours of dark berries and spices to mirror the bouquet dry stony gravels soils baked clay dark cherry and smoky black olive flavours. Tannins are youthful yet have a velvet texture about them the backbone of acidity and gently warming alcohol layer in weight and texture. A delicious wine still very youthful but will reward those who can wait. Best drinking from 2023 through 2030.” – Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier

Le Sol is one of the most sensational wines coming out of Gimblett Gravels and considering the competition that’s really saying something. ‘Le Sol’ means ‘the soil’ in French so the name is a salute to the gravelly soils that attract the sun in summer and insulate the vines in the winter. And it’s super important to look after these vines because they are a heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand in the 1840s. Craggy Range describe the vintage conditions in 2019 as “iconic” making this red from their Prestige Collection simply unmissable. This is a Syrah of overwhelming presence that can stand toe to toe with the finest wines of the Northern Rhône. Expect aromas of blackberry raspberry blackcurrant cocoa-dusted cherry liqueurs lavender smoke and peppery spice. There’s more of the same on the palate accompanied by a tautness that suggests immense latent energy and a wine that will age beautifully (especially in a magnum). Consider pairing with herby roasts strong cheeses or braised red meats.

Terry Peabody’s wife and daughter convinced him to establish a family wine business in the 1990s. After travelling the world in search of the perfect spot he settled on Gimblett Gravels in Hawke’s Bay New Zealand. This spot was chosen because of his love of big reds particularly Syrah and Bordeaux. Today Craggy Range is one of New Zealand’s most prestigious and highly awarded wine producers boasting an enviable portfolio spanning various varieties and regions. What unites them is world-class winemaking uncompromising attention to detail and technical excellence. Craggy Range is a member of the New Zealand Fine Wine Classification and were crowned New Zealand Winery of the Year in 2017 by leading wine writer Bob Campbell MW.
