Brunello di Montalcino 2013 - Cupano

Brunello di Montalcino 2013

2013 was an exceptional vintage for Brunello di Montalcino, and this slightly under-the-radar producer is one not to be missed. Refined but buzzing with energy, there’s plum, sour cherry, blackberry, polished wood, black tea, sweet spiced tobacco and creamy chocolate. Cupano’s 2013 is a quite simply a must-have for game season.

Cupano is a Brunello di Montalcino creating waves among those in the know. Located on a Unesco World Heritage Site, the estate was purchased by French cinematographer Lionel Cousin and his wife Ornella Tondini in the mid-1990s. The land had been used for grazing animals and was then abandoned, so no vines had been planted there for almost a century. As a result, this bare land had been spared the ravages of modern farming. The first three hectares were planted in 1997, then three more in 2013. Mentored by the legendary Henri Jayer and the famous Sangiovese expert Carlo Ferrini of Giodo – facts sure to pique the interest of fine wine aficionados – Lionel and Ornella have never used chemical fertilisers or pesticides, choosing to employ organic and biodynamic farming methods to their tiny vineyards instead. Cupano’s wines change considerably with the vintages, sometimes they’re all red fruit and floral, sometimes much darker almost Bordeaux-like. This makes them incredibly intriguing for the connoisseur.
