In an attempt to establish a “château” concept in Rioja, Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España – shortened to CVNE, misspelled and forevermore known as Cune (pronounced “coo-nay”) – created Viñedos del Contino. This 62-hectare estate stretches along a meander on the northern bank of the river Ebro. Here it’s sheltered and protected, resulting in it being home to some of the oldest vines in the region, particularly the rare and elegant Graciano. The wines are always super stylish and classic renditions of Rioja, somehow tasting exactly like red wine should.
Contino Reserva has been aged for two years in French and American oak, then for a further year in the bottle, giving it a superb richness and mouth-filling quality. It instantly reminds you of planing wood in your school days, there’s something grown up, smooth, satisfying and deeply reminiscent of freshly hewn oak about it. There’s also cocoa, blackberries, smoky coffee, jammy berries, cherry liqueur, vanilla and lavender; it’s drinking wonderfully, but will only improve with time. Pair it with a Sunday roast, rich game dishes or slow-cooked comfort food.£3.47 per 100.00ml
