16 Year Old Flora & Fauna Single Malt Scotch Whisky
“This is big, boisterous and sherried.” – Dave Broom
Dailuaine 16 Year Old – part of Diageo’s Flora & Fauna series – is one of those unsung classics. Definitely a malt for those who prefer their whisky on the heavy and leathery side, it’s richly packed with dark marmalade, sticky treacle tart, new suede shoes, boozy fruitcake, freshly lit wood burners, and toasted granola flecked with those banana chips, dried apricots, dates and chewy raisins. The whole experience is rather like enjoying a post-prandial Pedro Ximénez in a drawing room filled with antique furniture, leather-bound books and cigar smoke. Unctuous is the only word for it.
To say it’s one of Scotland’s hardest working distilleries, you rarely see anything from Dailuaine. That’s because this heavy, meaty and non-peated Speyside often gets used in blends; you’ll certainly notice it crops up a lot in Johnnie Walker and Compass Box’s top whiskies. In fact, until about a decade ago, only 2% of Dailuaine was bottled as single malt whisky. Founded in 1852 by William Mackenzie, it was the very first distillery in Scotland to have the now iconic pagoda-style roof. You’ll find it in good company surrounded by the likes of Aberlour, Balvenie and Glenfarclas, it draws its water from Balliemullich Burn and the name Dailuaine means ‘green meadow’.£10.5 per 100.00ml
