Le Clos Crozes-Hermitage 2016
Le Clos is a polished and sophisticated Crozes-Hermitage from a little vineyard on the Les Chassis plain, which you’ll find on the left bank of the Rhône. We think it’s a rival to many Hermitage reds that command far higher prices, as proven by its score of 93 points from Rhône-expert Jeb Dunnuck, formerly of Wine Advocate. Blackberries and blueberries are laced with violets, worn leather, cracked black pepper, gravelly earth after a sudden shower, graphite and a waft of smoke; it’s mesmerising stuff. Pair with a Turkish mixed grill, guinea fowl, roasted mushrooms on garlicky polenta, or a Sunday roast – particularly if there’s cranberry sauce involved.
Established by Charles Audibert and Philippe Delas in 1835, Delas Frères remained a family business for over 140 years and is revered for the elegance of its wines. Already incredibly well respected, this Rhône powerhouse based in Tournon has now passed into the ownership of the Rouzauds – one of the wine world’s most powerful and discerning families who also look after Champagne Louis Roederer, Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Domaines Ott, Ramos Pinto and Champagne Deutz. So you are in very safe hand, especially considering that head winemaker Jacques Grange worked for Michel Chapoutier and Jean-Luc Colombo before joining Delas Frères. Under his watchful eye, the quality has gone through the roof and the wines have gained an almost Burgundy-esque finesse.
