Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru Les Millandes 2016
“Charm in spades.” – Jancis Robinson
Due to frosts and hail, 2016 is a hard vintage to find. However, the quality of what remained from this decimated year was outstanding, because the vines concentrated all their goodness into so few grapes. Les Millandes – located close to the village of Morey-Saint-Denis – is considered one of the highest quality Premier Cru plots in the area, which is not surprising as it’s a direct descendant of the Grand Cru Clos-Saint-Denis and is literally just across the road from a swathe of world-famous Grands Crus.
Smooth, polished and pleasing like a conker. And it feels similarly autumnal too, with dried leaves; sweet, ripe and yet supremely elegant dark fruit; plum crumble; and just a touch of balsamic. Think about pairing with oxtail, tournedos, rich wine sauces, brooding stews and roasts.
Anne and Hervé Sigaut have been quietly making exceptional wines since 1990. Those in Pinot Noir’s inner circle have known this for some time. But the cat is now well and truly out of the bag and demand is ramping up, especially in vintages as rare as this one.£9.2 per 100.00ml
