Organic Porquerolles Rosé 2020
“Chanel’s newly launched rosé will transport you to the Côte d’Azur.” – Vogue
This summer’s most stylish Provence pink comes care of the luxury fashion house, Chanel.
Four miles long, two miles across and covered in almost every landscape and flora imaginable, Porquerolles is a paradise island just off the Côte d’Azur and the largest of the three Îles d’Hyères. Across the white sand beaches and turquoise sea from it, you can see views of the French president’s summer residence on the mainland. The romantic island was bought by François Joseph Fournier in 1912 as a gift for his wife Sylvia after he discovered a large seam of gold in Mexico. The couple planted vines there and his grandson, Sébastien Le Ber, maintained that tradition at Domaine de l’Ile, before passing stewardship to Chanel recently.
Chanel enlisted the expertise of a dream team consisting of Pierre Etcheberry (formerly of Château Lafleur in Pomerol) and Nicolas Audebert (from Chanel’s Châteaux Rauzan-Ségla and Canon), and 2020 is the pair’s first vintage. Interested in pedigree and quality rather than volume, only 9,000 cases are made of Domaine de l’Ile’s certified-organic rosé. This blend of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvèdre and Tibouren sees no oak, and it evokes the maritime influence and French Riviera sunshine. Vibrant raspberry sorbet, strawberry granita, crunchy peach, pink grapefruit zest and watermelon are flecked with a salty sea tang, Provençal wildflowers and savoury notes of rosemary and sage; this is summertime at its most Chanel chic.
