Beaujolais is really going through a renaissance. And for many Moulin-à-Vent is the pinnacle of Beaujolais, combining Rhône-like intensity with a propensity to age like the finest Burgundy. Thierry Janin’s Domaine de l’Iris offers a perfect example.
It’s as explosive, bright and dramatic as the flower the domaine is named after; popping with ripe cherry, wild strawberry, plum, blackcurrant, rosemary and clove. Divine with salt beef and lashings of mustard, rare beef Thai salads, Sunday roasts or homemade tomato sauces.
Thierry Janin is the epitome of a Beaujolais vigneron. He owns just one hectare and works with a further six on a sharecropping basis. Located just below the emblematic Le Château du Moulin-à-Vent, the vines for his Moulin-à-Vent are around 50 years old and are farmed organically. Despite some pesky hail, 2017 was a warmer and sunnier vintage on the whole, and the wines have a wonderful texture and depth of flavour.£2.53 per 100.00ml
