98 points “Impressive… Resounding finesse and equilibrium showing the full potential of the plateau La Crau.” – James Suckling

97 points “Full-bodied pure incredibly elegant with fine tannin and a huge finish this is classic Vieux Télégraphe all the way that has the balance to drink now.” – Jeb Dunnuck

96 points “Undoubtedly one of the top vintages of this wine.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

The flagship red from one of the fine wine world’s true greats.

Still known by many as “Le Crau” after the lieu-dit where the on average 70-year-old vines lie the Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge is a masterpiece painted predominantly with Grenache supplemented by Mourvèdre Syrah Cinsault Clairette and other bits and pieces as the mood takes them. Matured in French oak for almost two years it’s bottled unfined and unfiltered making it full flavoured vegan friendly and just as nature intended. Always one of the most consistent and best value examples of Châteauneuf-du-Pape available this vintage is a bright energetic and intriguingly elegant hotpot of cherry compote raspberry jam rose petals white pepper toffee musky spices pine sap black tea and dried herbs. Not quite as dark and brooding as some years this is a stunning partner to still-pink meat roasted vegetables and the lighter side of comfort food.

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe run by the Brunier family are world-renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape producers. As one of the oldest and greatest estates in this famous wine region their bottles are nothing short of legendary. It all started in 1891 when Henri Brunier gifted his son Hippolyte a few plots of land on the commanding La Crau plateau. It was an unusual present as the land was seen by most as being impossible to cultivate because of all the pebbles. But Hippolyte persevered and the rest is history. The name comes from the fact that this site was where the inventor of the optical telegraph Claude Chappe built one of his semaphore signal towers in 1821. The Brunier family also make stunning Marc du Châteauneuf-du-Pape Gigondas at Domaine Les Pallières Ventoux under the Mégaphone label Le Pigeoulet in Vaucluse and Massaya wines in Lebanon; all with the same loving care and attention.
