Thierry Germain Saumur Champigny 2018
A fresh and crunchy Cabernet Franc from a biodynamic producer that just seems to get better with every vintage. Maybe it’s because Thierry Germain of Domaine des Roches Neuves listens to his vines and constantly learns from them. Purple flowers, stewed red fruits and earthy tones, this is a Loire Valley wine for lovers of Burgundy. It sings, and will do so even more if you pair it with a rabbit stew, wild mushroom soup, lamb cooked with anchovies and crispy greens. It can also be served lightly chilled on a summer day with a barbeque or a lunch of cured meats, salads and pickles.
Thierry Germain arrived in the Loire from Bordeaux at the tender age of 23. It took him a while to adjust to the change, but he now produces some of the Loire Valley’s most thrilling wines. He was taken under the wing of Charly Foucault of Clos Rougeard, whose father saw the danger of pesticides long before many others. Organic viticulture therefore had a massive influence on Thierry; setting off as one of the pioneers of biodynamic farming, he has subsequently become one of the movement’s all-time greats.
