Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Morgeot 2017
Fontaine-Gagnard is an estate with the bit between its teeth. This thoroughbred’s run of form makes it one well worth placing a bet on. Ex-Air Force engineer Richard Fontaine married into the Gagnard family – who were already well-established winemakers – and over the last 20 years has elevated the domaine into one of Chassagne-Montrachet’s shining beacons. Now, his daughter Céline makes the wines and they are benchmarks for the appellation year in, year out.
Testament to how good this producer is, this is a Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Morgeot that’s as delicate and intricate as lace. Hailing from the southern, Santenay end of the appellation, it’s tightly wound, highly scented and mouth-watering.
This white offers up an intriguing combination of musk, apple, gun smoke, orange peel, peach, lemon, blossom and silk. Serve this graceful Chardonnay as an accompaniment to buttered lemon sole, goats’ cheese with mango salsa, Jersey Royals, risotto with wild mushrooms and lemon thyme, or pasta filled with roasted squash and hazelnuts.
