Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Bas de Combes 2013
You may have just found one of Burgundy's best kept secrets. Charles Van Canneyt is one of the wine world’s most exciting young talents, but unfortunately he only makes around 1,200 bottles of this exquisite Pinot Noir.
The area between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romanée is one of those often overlooked parts of Burgundy. Here you’ll find Les Bas de Combes, not far from the much-loved Aux Malconsorts and the famous Grand Cru La Tâche. In the 1861 classification, this plot was classified at the same level as neighbouring Les Chaumes, which is now a Premier Cru in Vosne-Romanée. But today, very few people are aware of Les Bas de Combes, despite it containing vines owned by Domaine Leroy and Meo-Camuzet. This intriguing terroir should be on the radar of any Burgundy aficionado.
Fermented using indigenous yeasts and aged in oak for 16 months, this is bottled without being fined or filtered, making it vegan friendly. Domaine Alain Hudelot-Noëllat’s Les Bas de Combes feels more like a Vosne-Romanee than a Nuits-Saint-Georges. Gamey, plummy, spicy and earthy; this is an incredible find.
Domaine Alain Hudelot-Noëllat has long been one of Burgundy’s great producers. But since the incredibly talented Charles Van Canneyt – described by wine critic Neal Martin as “a winemaker par excellence” – took over his family’s domaine, it has been propelled into the region’s top tier. Charles Van Canneyt is creating wines of spellbinding finesse and the kind of depth you could lose yourself in. And now that he has married into the Gagey Family (of Louis Jadot fame) and started working with Johan Björklund (patron of the highly respected Hôtel de Beaune), he’s only going to become more and more of a force to be reckoned with. In short, there has never been a better time to buy wines from Domaine Alain Hudelot-Noëllat.£7.8 per 100.00ml
