Meursault Cuvée Charles Maxime 2016
Jean-Pierre Latour may have described 2016 as “the growing season from hell”, but his wines are pure heaven. Battling the frost, mildew and the almost drought conditions, he was left with very few grapes. But what remained was rich and concentrated and has even drawn comparison to the great 2008 vintage from highly respected Burgundy expert Allen Meadows.
Cuvée Charles Maxime is named after the founders of this domaine, Charles Giraud and Maxime Latour. And it’s a spectacular Meursault made using natural yeasts and a blend of largely organic vines from several of Jean-Pierre’s plots: Les Chevalieres, Les Corbins, Le Cromin, Les Crotots, Le Limozin, Le Malpoiries, Les Pelles and Les Vireuils. It’s fermented and matured in oak for over a year, creating an unctuous and quite lavish style, layered with apricot, nectarine, pear, baked apple, grapefruit zest, toasted hazelnut and vanilla cream. Pair it with rich, creamy dishes or a slow-cooked coq au vin.£6.93 per 100.00ml
