The fruit on this Nuits-Saint-Georges is exquisite. It’s as if Michel Gros has captured the very essence of raspberry, cherry and blackberry, before expertly lacing it with oak and spices. The quality here shouldn’t be surprising because of the exceptional vintage and the fact that the majority of the plots used to create this wine abut the Premier Crus on the Vosne-Romanée side of the region. Having picked up a Silver Medal from the International Wine Challenge, who praised its “intense oak aromatics”, this would be a great choice for pairing with slow-cooked stews, wild mushroom risottos, carpaccio topped with truffles, rocket and shavings of Parmigiano Reggiano, or roasted aubergine-based dishes.
Michel Gros was awarded the International Wine Challenge’s Red Winemaker of the Year, not once, but twice. Considering the number of people making red wine throughout the world, that’s a considerable feat. But not a surprising one considering that he’s the sixth generation of a Burgundian winemaking dynasty, and his sister, brother and cousin all run well-respected wineries under the name Gros.
A go-to producer for wine critics; Neal Martin says: “I feel that I have been visiting Michel Gros in Vosne since I was a child. He was one of the first growers to show me what a barrel cellar looks like and I’ve been enjoying his wines since the late 1990s.” Considering how good 2015 was for red Burgundy, this wine is one to snap up.£7.73 per 100.00ml
