Vieux Marc de Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2005 500ml
Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe, run by the Brunier family, are world-renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape producers. However, every year they create a tiny quantity of brandy from the leftover skins, pulp and seeds from the Grenache grapes used to make their precious Châteauneuf-du-Pape. These usually discarded bits, known as pomace or marc, are carefully pressed and then slowly distilled in a copper pot still, the remarkable liquid is then filled into just five 225 litre barrels and left to mature for at least 10 years. As so little is made and it’s such a labour of love, this Rhône spirit is very hard to come by.
This Vieux Marc de Châteauneuf-du-Pape hails from an outstanding and particularly long-lived vintage. When asked about 2005 in the region, Daniel Brunier said: “There is enormous difference between the 2005 and 2006 – in 15 years, around 2025, the 2005 will be right there, and the 2006 will be a little old man.” So this spirit is one for the long haul.
As powerful an animal as their Châteauneuf-du-Pape; fresh fruit mingles with dried fruit, and earthy oak creates a savoury balance to this marc’s sweetness. Serve this up as a digestif after a meal, preferably one at which you’ve served one of Vieux Télégraphe’s wines.
