Wunderwerk Pinot Noir 2014 - Dreissigacker

Wunderwerk Pinot Noir 2014

Wunderwerk is not the easiest German word to translate. Ingenious? Miracle? Masterpiece? Marvel? Take your pick, because they all work for this stunning Pinot Noir – or, to give it its local name, Spätburgunder. Aged for two years in a combination of French and Austrian oak barrels, this red feels like the perfect combination of Old World style and New World skill. Velvety smooth, but also refreshingly crisp, there’s summery raspberry, strawberry and cherry fruits, then beneath just the slightest hint of savoury soy sauce, mushroom, smoke and Chinese five spice. Another superbly versatile wine that can be sipped on its own, with slow-cooked stews, pink duck, spicy salmon, spätzle, game or roast lamb and spring greens.

Tasting Dreissigacker’s dazzling organic wines causes one to momentarily forget that countries like France, Italy and Spain even grow grapes. Leading a Rheinhessen revival, this ambitious and highly talented German producer is fast becoming our latest coupe de coeur. And we’re not alone in our new-found love of Jochen Dreissigacker, Wine Advocate say that he “has become one of the very best Riesling producers in Rheinhessen” and even speak about his wines in the same breath as those of local legend Weingut Keller.

The winery now known as Dreissigacker was founded by Jacob Sauer back in 1728. But it was Jochen Dreissigacker who really revolutionised it when he entered the business in 2011 and then took over from his parents. The estate’s vineyards can be found in prime locations in Bechtheim and Westhofen, they’re all certified organic, there’s a little dabbling in biodynamics and the yields are kept to almost startlingly low levels. The approach adopted in the modern winery is very natural, hands-off and slow; fermentation uses natural yeasts and their greatest wines are held back for three years before release. The result is wines with incredible force and bright purity.
