Morstein Riesling 2014
Morstein is considered the very best site in Westhofen and has been producing wines since 1282. Dreissigacker’s 40-year-old vines in this area create a dry Riesling masterpiece. Steel, chalk, piquant caraway, marmalade, green apple, zippy lime and crisp peach cleanse the mouth and set it watering for another sip. It will pair beautifully with everything from meaty German classics to fragrant curries, but it will also continue to improve for another ten to fifteen years.
Tasting Dreissigacker’s dazzling organic wines causes one to momentarily forget that countries like France, Italy and Spain even grow grapes. Leading a Rheinhessen revival, this ambitious and highly talented German producer is fast becoming our latest coupe de coeur. And we’re not alone in our new found love of Jochen Dreissigacker, Wine Advocate say that he “has become one of the very best Riesling producers in Rheinhessen” and even speak about his wines in the same breath as those of local legend Weingut Keller.
The winery now known as Dreissigacker was founded by Jacob Sauer back in 1728. But it was Jochen Dreissigacker who really revolutionised it when he entered the business in 2011 and then took over from his parents. The estate’s vineyards can be found in prime locations in Bechtheim and Westhofen, they’re all certified organic, there’s a little dabbling in biodynamics and the yields are kept to almost startlingly low levels. The approach adopted in the modern winery is very natural, hands-off and slow; fermentation uses natural yeasts and their greatest wines are held back for three years before release. The result is wines with incredible force and bright purity.
