Introducing a fleeting opportunity to own a bottle from the very first cask ever filled by one of the UK’s most exciting distilleries.

On the 8th April 2015, our friends at East London Liquor Company filled their first cask with their London Rye. They had never aged anything in wood before that moment. The barrel in question was made of virgin American oak with a heavy toast, and it remained at their distillery next to the Hertford Union Canal in London for seven years. Exposed to the fluctuations in temperature and humidity of a working distillery, that spirit aged beautifully. On 19th August 2022, it was bottled at a punchy cask strength of 63%, yielding just 96 numbered bottles. This is Cask One of East London Liquor Company’s London Rye and when it’s gone, it’s gone.

The mash bill comprises 40% malted rye and 60% Maris Otter malted barley, creating a whisky that is spicy without being overpowering, but that also has a malty and drinkable character even at such a high ABV. It was slowly fermented (so that bold and complex flavours have time to build) using an English ale yeast, and then distilled through a double pot still. Seven years of ageing have created a whisky that smells like red velvet cake, toasted almond, rosehip and flat white coffee. On the palate, there’s cherry liqueur chocolates, green apple skin, roasted pineapple and Christmas cake. In a world full of repeats and remakes, it’s wonderful to taste a genuine first.

The East London Liquor Company brought spirits back to the heart of the East End for the first time in a century. Based in a former glue factory near Victoria Park, they never stop innovating. ELLC feels like the future.
