Zweigelt may not be a household name in the UK, but it’s Austria’s most popular red grape variety. Remember that we didn’t really know about Grüner Veltliner until those clever Austrians introduced it to us, and look how well that worked out. The unfeasibly attractive couple behind Ebner-Ebenauer have crafted something almost Burgundian in its elegance from this tiny plot of old vine Zweigelt in picturesque Ketzelsdorfer Kellergasse (we recommend Googling it, you’ll want to visit immediately). Silky, summery and spicy; this has barbeques and al fresco dining written all over it.
Located not far from the Czech border in the Weinviertal Austrian wine region, you’ll find a little yellow, somewhat Tuscan-looking winery covered with foliage in the town of Poysdorf. It’s the family home of viticulturalist Manfred Ebenauer and his winemaking wife Marion Ebner. He brings the deep working knowledge of their old vines, soils and local traditions while she keeps them cutting edge – a trait she showed early in her career when she aged wine from Schloss Gobelsburg in new oak to immense critical acclaim. Together they are creating some of Austria’s most exciting wines.
