Brut Rosé Grand Cru NV
Very few can hold a candle to this non-vintage rosé Champagne. Egly-Ouriet Brut Rosé Grand Cru is a blend of roughly 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay with a splash of Ambonnay Rouge for colour – all of which comes from Grand Cru sites in Ambonnay, Verzenay and Bouzy – barrel fermented and aged on the lees for a staggering 48 months. Wild strawberry, cranberry, raspberry, lemon blossom and zest, baked red apple and Bakewell tart, it’s in a word: electrifying.
Egly-Ouriet was ‘Grower Champagne’ before the movement even began; this fourth-generation producer based in Ambonnay has a huge cult following and ranks alongside the likes of Selosse, Larmandier-Bernier and Vouette & Sorbée. Robert Parker admits to drinking at home, leading Champagne critic Richard Juhlin describes them as “probably the foremost grower of Pinot Noir in the entire Champagne region”, and fellow critic Antonio Galloni praises their “inimitable class”, concluding that “these wines are at the very top of the pecking order in Champagne today.”
Following organic, biodynamic and minimal intervention principles on their old vine wines, Egy-Ouriet employs barrel fermentation, long extended lees ageing and no filtering or fining. The result is Champagne of great power, all-encompassing richness and exotic intensity; many call it Burgundy with bubbles. Simply a must-try for any sparkling wine lover.
