Pouilly-Fuissé Les Crays 2016
“Real edge to this – very ambitious and exciting.” – Jancis Robinson
Considering how many wines Jancis Robinson must taste, the fact that this excited her is a ringing endorsement. Pouilly-Fuissé Les Crays comes from the south-facing hillside of the Rock of Vergisson. This bright vineyard is shielded from the cooling winds, so the old vines produce wines that are full-bodied and full-on. Packed to the rafters with oatmeal, ripe pear, orange blossom, spices, peanut brittle, oak and smoke wafting on a sea breeze, this powerful and lively wine adores rich, creamy or buttery dishes, Lobster Thermidor or lightly spiced laksa or Vietnamese curry.
Eric Forest is an up-and-coming vigneron. He represents the fifth generation of his family to farm this domaine, and his grandfather imparted a wealth of knowledge in nature and biodynamics. Eric tends a tiny handful of plots on the steep slopes of the Rock of Vergisson, each planted between 1930 and 1979. These old vines produce a limited yield, but one of mesmerising intensity and depth. The wines are lovingly hand bottled and usually unfiltered, resulting in rich and full-on Chardonnay of the highest calibre.£4.67 per 100.00ml
