Ryan Riesling 2017 - Escarpment

Ryan Riesling 2017

Exclusive to Harvey Nichols, this is the first and last opportunity to get your hands on Escarpment’s Ryan Riesling 2017. This New Zealand producer is fast developing a cult following among fine wine connoisseurs, but they have announced that they will not be making this exceptional Riesling ever again. Luckily, we’ve managed to secure the last of its first and only vintage.

Named after the winemaker Larry McKenna’s son Ryan – and certainly a play on its classic style by comparing it to Rhine Riesling – this wine is harvested from a single vineyard on Te Muna Road in Martinborough. Partially barrel fermented, it spends time on the skins and lees to add texture and weight. As charming as Ryan Reynolds and as beautiful as Ryan Gosling, Ryan Riesling is bone-dry and displays laser-like precision. There’s tangy lime, gin-like botanicals, wildflowers, Granny Smith apples, freshly grated ginger, guava, dried herbs and sea spray. Serve as an aperitif, as an alternative to your G&T, or – dare we even suggest it – as a refreshing spritzer. It would also make a cracking accompaniment to Vietnamese dishes, tacos filled with guacamole and crisp greens, calamari doused in lemon, or just about any seafood.

Raymond Chan, who sadly passed away in 2019, was one of New Zealand’s most respected wine critics. He was always a huge fan of Escarpment, awarding it Winery of the Year in 2015, and on tasting this wine, he said: “This is an intense and penetrating dry Riesling with bright and lively lime fruit along with herbs and florals on a brisk palate. Reminiscent of a gin and tonic!” Another New Zealand wine expert, Master of Wine Bob Campbell, awarded this 94 points – a remarkable score considering its price.

Owned by Larry and Sue McKenna and Robert and Mem Kirby, Escarpment takes its name from the limestone ridge that runs through Burgundy. Martinborough has always displayed a certain Burgundian elegance, with New Zealand wine expert Sam Kim saying that this estate’s wines “could be mistaken for a top-flight Burgundy”. They use the Artisan Range – in which Ryan Riesling dwells – as a place to explore new grape varieties and winemaking techniques, making them some of the estate’s most exciting wines.
