They say you can’t judge a book by its cover. In a similar vein, this is a wine that is all about what the label doesn’t tell you.
Firstly, simply labelled as Famille J-M Cazes Saint-Estèphe, it would only be apparent to label spotters that this is made from the young vines at the highly respected Château Ormes de Pez. The property is also owned by the same family who run the Pauillac powerhouse Château Lynch-Bages. Secondly, it doesn’t explain what a phenomenal vintage 2015 was. Respected critic and Master of Wine Jeannie Cho Lee went as far as to “compare it to 2005 and 2009 in quality”, Decanter Magazine noted that “several châteaux have arguably made the best ever wines”, and Steven Spurrier announced that “Bordeaux is back.” So wines from top properties are not to be missed. And finally, it doesn’t tell you what a fragrant, balanced and silky red this is. Sometimes the world of fine wine needs a little digging, because the best things in life are not handed to you on a platter – canapés being the obvious exception to that rule.
Famille J-M Cazes Saint-Estèphe 2015 is a wonderful introduction to a property that can trace its history back to the 16th Century. Renovated and modernised by the Cazes family in the 1990s, it’s now one of the most sought-after Cru Bourgeois.£3.93 per 100.00ml
