The Morellino di Scansano Riserva 2018 is a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon matured for 15 months in big Slavonian oak barrels and – according to the experts at Wine Advocate – sometimes some old barriques that were used for the iconic Saffredi. Supremely focussed the wine offers intense black cherry toasted almonds spice game leather chocolate and cedar. Pair with rustic pasta dishes cheesy bakes slow-cooked ragù or wild mushrooms.
Based in the Tuscan fine wine hotbed of Maremma Fattoria Le Pupille is owned and run by Elisabetta Geppetti. Since its foundation in the 1970s it has grown from 2 to 75 hectares and now sits at the pinnacle for wine production in Morellino di Scansano. With a little help from the titan of fine wine Giacomo Tachis (think Sassicaia Solaia and Tignanello) Gepetti launched her flagship Bordeaux-inspired Saffredi in 1987. Only 20 years old when she took over the family estate for three decades she has tirelessly promoted Morellino di Scansano through her showstopping wines also finding time to raise five children. A truly inspirational powerhouse.
