Fentimans Victorian Lemonade is botanically brewed using the juice of one and half lemons in every bottle. It’s given a wee bit of warmth from a fermented ginger root extract and a verdant touch from a herb infusion that includes speedwell (a wildflower that tastes of peas) and juniper (every gin lover’s favourite). Serve it over lashings of ice or take it on a picnic. Alternatively mix it with gin to create a summery cocktail.
In 1905 Thomas Fentiman – an iron puddler from Cleckheaton in West Yorkshire – was asked for a loan by fellow tradesman. Security was provided by a recipe for a botanically brewed ginger beer. The loan was never repaid so Thomas Fentiman found himself with a unique recipe and decided to run with it. Well he actually sold it door-to-door using a horse and cart. In the 1930s Thomas’ dog Fearless won the obedience class at Crufts. So he put her portrait on his bottles. The world may have changed a lot since then but Fentimans not so much. Today the business is owned by Thomas Fentiman’s great grandson and they still botanically brew their soft drinks for a superior flavour. They bottle in glass rather than stone jars now but Fearless is still prominent on each and every one.
