93 points, “Scan the dessert case and choose your favourite, because they’re all here in abundance: cake, doughnuts, sticky buns, pralines, cocoa-dusted truffles, and strawberry tarts on the nose. Espresso, tea, and spice notes add some gravitas to the palate, which is chewy and oak forward, but dark fruit, milk chocolate, and sweet pecans and peanuts maintain balance. The finish is a dream, lengthy and well-developed, with nutmeg, chai spice, toasted oak, tea leaf, milk chocolate, and boysenberry.” – Whisky Advocate

One farm, one distillery and one barrel; that’s all Filibuster use to make their Single Estate Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Now, Kentucky is seen as the epicentre of the American whiskey industry and many put this down to the mineral-rich, limestone-filtered water in the area. But the water in Shenandoah County, where Filibuster make this whiskey, has an even higher mineral content than Kentucky’s. Having already picked up several gold medals and the review from Whisky Advocate, this Single Estate Straight Bourbon Whiskey is putting Virginia on the map and we can’t wait for more.

Established and run by the Dilawri family, Filibuster Distillery is a refreshingly different enterprise with an industry dominated by white men, for being owned by a woman from a minority background. Having amassed decades of experience within the speciality spirits retail industry, the Dilawri family had become quite an opinionated bunch. So, inspired by both old-school Scottish traditions and the pioneering craft scene, they decided to build their own distillery. The name, Filibuster, comes from the unique American political process of delaying or preventing a Senate decision by speaking continuously and “talking a bill to death”. The distillery chose this name because it was born in Washington D.C. before moving to Shenandoah County in Virginia; they sometimes find the political discourse within the nation’s capital comedic so wanted to lampoon it a little; they are also uniquely American; and because they aren’t afraid to express their opinions. So, let’s all raise a glass to standing up, taking the floor and being heard.
