5 Year Old Oude Graanjenever Jenever
With some claiming that the gin boom is approaching its zenith, there has never been a better time to go back and see where it may have all begun, with Jenever. This juniper-flavoured spirit is adored in the Netherlands and Belgium, but sadly is rarely seen in the UK. Filliers Oude Graanjenever is a cracking example, handmade in an old school style from a basis of corn (maize), rye and malt, before being aged for 5 years in American oak barrels.
The liquid that is eventually filled into this traditional cylindrical clay jug, sits somewhere between a gin and a Bourbon in style. Sipping it neat, as you might a whisky, reveals notes of chai latte, cocoa, mint, grass, toasted walnuts, polished wood, rose petals, peppery juniper and the Christmas spice and orange combination of a pomander. Where a 5-year-old whisky might be a little rough around the edges, this Jenever is smooth and wonderfully balanced. If you want to get all experimental, try mixing it into a Wet Martini (meaning with a proportion of vermouth) or a Martinez is also highly recommended.
Born in 1792 in Bachte-Maria-Leerne, near the Belgian city of Ghent in East Flanders, Karel Lodewijk Filliers kicked off the Filliers family’s love affair with Jenever in the 19th Century. Well at least we hope he did, otherwise the maths suggests there would need to be questions asked of his parents. The Filliers were distilling for two generations, honing their skills, before they created the company that bears their name. Now in the hands of the fifth generation, they are creating some wonderfully modern Jenever as well as the more traditional styles that stay true to their roots.
