The Big Blind 2012

The Big Blind is a marvellous mashup of unparalleled proportions. The grapes are grown in the Adelaide Hills by a chap called Caj. Rather than sticking to the conventional Australian classics like Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, he’s growing the highly unusual Piedmontese varieties Nebbiolo and Barbera. Caj gives his grapes to an Essex boy called Matt ‘Gantos’ Gant and an Aussie called John ‘JR’ Retsas, who turn them into fun – pure and simple – in a gargantuan warehouse that used to be owned by Penfolds. This dynamic duo age the wine in old French barrels for 15 months, and it comes out tasting like bottled cherry liqueur chocolates infused with cola, gun smoke, worn leather and mulling spices. Serve alongside wild mushroom risotto, smoked duck breast, gnocchi with truffles, stuffed peppers, cured meats or sausage and mash.
