Fat of the Land is a celebration of Barossa. This region is famed for the diversity of the Shiraz produced in each of its sub-regions, and First Drop revel in this by taking grapes from the finest single vineyards and using them to create their flagship range. This one hails from Seppeltsfield in the west of the Barossa, and a vineyard owned by their mate Darren. They age it for 20 months in oak, the nectar that gets filled into the bottles after that time is an energetic concoction of strawberry jam, tangy raspberry, cherry liqueur, desiccated coconut, prunes, chilli, Bassett’s Liquorice Allsorts and bacon, or maybe more accurately Frazzles. It’s an absolutely riveting wine and so different from the Ebenezer version.

Set up by Essex boy Matt Gant and South Australian John Retsas, First Drop is part winery and part frivolous merrymaking in a ginormous warehouse abandoned by Penfolds. This duo crafts grapes grown by their friends into fun-loving and easy-going wines with remarkable distinction and texture. They also do this without using animal products in the fining process, making the entire range vegan-friendly.
