A Touriga Vai Nua Signature Series 2018
Each year Fitapreta’s winemaker António Maçanita makes an experimental release exploring a new avenue of Portuguese winemaking in Alentejo. These are bottled under the Signature Series and, rather democratically, if they prove popular, he continues to make them. A Touriga Vai Nua – meaning “Touriga Nacional goes naked” because it’s organic and unusually for this big Port grape variety completely unoaked – was first made in the 2015 vintage. Wine Advocate loved it, praising its “gorgeous aromatics” and concluding: “It is simply delicious, too. For all of that intensity of flavour, its freshness lifts it perfectly.” So, Fitapreta made it again and again and again. And the 2018 vintage is better than ever.
Wine critic Matthew Jukes has previously said that A Touriga Vai Nua “captures all of the vital essences of the grape like never before… this rose petal, fresh blood and liquorice-scented wine is sheer heaven.” Expect a red of great purity and freshness with dark blackberry and raspberry fruit and notes of violet, rose, tarragon and orange. This is a great summer red for al fresco dining and could even be served lightly chilled.
Fitapreta was the coming together of a Portuguese winemaker and a British viticulturist. After honing his skills in Napa, Australia and at Château Lynch-Bages in Bordeaux, António Maçanita returned home, where he met David Booth – who was already making quite a name for himself in Portugal. Their very first wine together was awarded a trophy from the International Wine Challenge and Fitapreta has been banging out some of Portugal’s most exciting wines ever since. Sadly, David Booth died in 2012, but the wines have remained resolutely excellent in his honour.
