While tasting one of Fonseca’s famous Ports, respected wine critic Matthew Jukes wrote, “We should all drink more Port, as it’s one of the world’s most iconic wine styles.” So enthralled by this great Port house, he went on to describe them as a “swaggering talent”.

So, what better way to experience this “swaggering talent” and “drink more Port” than with this 500ml bottle of Fonseca’s fabulous Tawny Port. Matured for three years in oak casks, it loses the ruby-red colour of its youth and takes on an amber hue, mellowing and gaining richness. The result is a charming Tawny Port brimming with apricot jam, plum crumble, marmalade, butterscotch, toasted almond and spices. The crisp acidity balances the sweet complexity, making it a perfect match for a cheeseboard or rich pâté, but also a delicious alternative to dessert wine with nutty puddings, red berries, chocolate and festive fare.

Owned by The Fladgate Partnership, who also look after Taylor’s and Croft, Fonseca has a cult following. It remains the choice of those in-the-know, maybe precisely because it has a slightly lower profile than its stable mates. However, this is very much a Port House firing on all cylinders; the quality of their Ports is through the roof and should not be missed.
