The beauty of the 1980s is something that revealed itself quite gradually. But the styles the music the fashion and the films are all making a comeback. At first glance the 1980s also appeared to be a tricky period for Port producers but a few stunning wines have now started to re-emerge. Fonseca 1985 is “the best wine from a difficult decade for Port” according to Decanter who have previously described it as a “real ‘wow’ of a wine that promises to last a lifetime” and “never fails to impress”.

Too often overlooked in favour of one of the more famous and more tannic producers Fonseca is one of our all-time favourites. Take your taste buds for a trip back to 1985 with this Port and its sticky date dried fig sloe gin blackcurrant liquorice and Christmas cake flavours. Maybe stick a cassette into your Walkman and enjoy a little you time Eighties style.

While tasting one of Fonseca’s famous Ports respected wine critic Matthew Jukes wrote “We should all drink more Port as it’s one of the world’s most iconic wine styles.” So enthralled by this great Port house he went on to describe them as a “swaggering talent”. So what better way could there be to experience this “swaggering talent” and “drink more Port” than by adding one of their Vintage Ports to your wine rack forthwith.

Owned by The Fladgate Partnership who also look after Taylor’s and Croft Fonseca has a cult following. It remains the choice of those in-the-know maybe precisely because it has a slightly lower profile than its stable mates. However this is very much a Port House firing on all cylinders; the quality of their Ports is through the roof and should not be missed.
