Founded in 1859, Gaja represents a revolutionary force in Italian winemaking and is justifiably ranked amongst the world’s very greatest producers. Famous for producing exquisite Barolos and Barbaresco wines from the Piedmont area of Italy, Gaja was a pioneer in the production of single-vineyard releases and modern winemaking techniques which effectively put his native region on the wine map. Given such honours as ‘the undisputed king of Barbaresco’ and ‘the man who dragged Piedmont into the modern world’, Gaja has acquired an iconic status and the wines are some of the world’s most coveted releases. This grappa is produced from the high-quality pomace of the legendary Gaja vineyard Sperss in Serralunga. Produced from 94% Nebbiolo and 6% Barbera it is aged in French oak for an unspecified length of time before release. It’s a truly delicious example; softer and more complex than most examples, with the oak imparting a distinct roundness and character. Incredibly limited, this would make a fine addition to any digestif collection.
