Barbera d'Alba Vigna Cerretta 2015 - Giacomo Conterno

Giacomo Conterno

Barbera d'Alba Vigna Cerretta 2015

94 points, “A broad, ample wine, the 2015 is beautifully resonant on the palate, with all of the expansiveness that is so typical of this site… exactly what makes Barbera so compelling in the first place.” – Antonio Galloni

The Cerretta vineyard is famed for the Barolo it produces; however, the Barbera it yields is a hidden gem. 2015 gave the site a little more heat, which is relished by the Barbera grape, and it rewards the drinker with wildflowers, a mix of red and black cherries, spiced plum crumble, smoke, and freshly laid tarmac. Conterno prove themselves absolute masters in a hot vintage like this, as, despite its inkiness, this Barbera has a wonderful elegance. A classic match to anything with a rich cheese sauce or wild mushrooms.

Probably Piedmont’s finest producer, there can be no better proponent of ‘traditional’ Barolo than Giacomo Conterno. The winery has passed from Giacomo to Giovanni and now resides in the hands of Roberto. According to Robert Parker: “While Conterno’s wines have often been profound, in recent vintages the estate has found another level of finesse.” So, if you haven’t yet tried them, now is the time.
