This covetable gift set contains three different bottles from Batch 3 of GlenAllachie’s Virgin Oak Series. These limited-edition releases explore the impact of rare oak on one of Speyside’s most exciting whiskies, and quite the departure from their normally Sherry-led style.
The flight includes the following (all of which are bottled at 48% without chill-filtration or added colour):
- GlenAllachie 8 Year Old Scottish Virgin Oak Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ml: Initially matured in ex-Bourbon barrels before being finished in casks made of Scottish Sessile Oak (Quercus Petraea) grown on the Atlantic coast. This expensive and knotty wood is really challenging to work with, so is seldom seen in the whisky world, despite growing in such a big whisky-producing nation. Scotland is wet, so the wood was airdried for about 36 months, then it was toasted and charred to a medium level (as it was for all three expressions). It layers notes of blonde chocolate, orange zest and toffee over GlenAllachie’s orchard fruit, flapjack, heather honey, cinnamon bun and chocolate-covered gingerbread flavours.
- GlenAllachie 10 Year Old Spanish Virgin Oak Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ml: Initially matured in ex-Bourbon barrels before being finished in casks made of Spanish Oak (Quercus Robur) sourced from the Cantabrian Mountain Chain that spans the regions of Galicia and Asturias. The full-bodied and tannic wood from this humid climate is airdried for around 18 months and imparts notes of treacle, coffee and dried fruit (think sultanas, banana chips, glacé cherries and mixed peel), while also enhancing GlenAllachie’s natural stem ginger nuances.
- GlenAllachie 7 Year Old Hungarian Virgin Oak Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ml: Initially matured in ex-Bourbon barrels before being finished in casks made of Hungarian Oak (also Quercus Petraea) harvest from the Zemplén forest near the famous vineyards of Tokaj. The tough growing conditions and long winters in this region cause the trees to grow slowly with tight grains, which always result in elegant ageing for spirits and fine wines. The result is silky smooth and highly aromatic. So, expect more citrus zest, lemon drop, golden raisin and caramelised pear in the flavour profile.
Over the last half-century, Master Distiller Billy Walker has built a reputation for reinventing distilleries. Most recently, he regenerated BenRiach, GlenDronach and Glenglassaugh before selling them to Brown Forman for a hefty sum. Now, he has taken on GlenAllachie (named after an old Scottish Gaelic phrase that translates to the “Valley of the Rocks”) and the awards are already rolling in.
