Batch 2 of GlenAllachie’s 10 Year Old Cask Strength was awarded 95 points and a gold medal by the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2019. Two years later, Batch 4 was crowned “World’s Best Single Malt” at the World Whiskies Awards. We’re now up to Batch 9 of this coveted limited-edition release, and it’s yet another cracker worthy of joining its predecessors.

With half a century of experience under his belt, Master Distiller Billy Walker (formerly of BenRiach, GlenDronach and Glenglassaugh) clearly knows what he’s doing. He created this stunning Scotch by maturing his new make spirit for a decade in a marriage of Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso Sherry casks, Rioja barriques and medium charred/medium toasted American Virgin Oak barrels. He then bottled it at a natural cask strength of 58.1% and without chill-filtration or added colour. So, all that mahogany beauty is just what Billy Walker intended, in its purest form.

GlenAllachie 10 Year Old Cask Strength Batch 9 follows the distillery’s Sherry-led style, but will a little more heat to warm the cockles. So, expect dried fruit, Christmas cake, praline, treacle, mocha and hot cross bun from the Sherry influence; red berries, plum and woody spices from the Rioja barrels; the sweetness of crème brûlée topping, vanilla cream and honey from the American oak; and fiery ginger and pepper from that punchy ABV. A fine choice for charging the hip flask before going wild camping or for thawing out on cold nights.

GlenAllachie – pronounced ‘Glen-al-ACK-ee’ – is one of those intriguing Single Malts that you’ve probably loved for some time, but just without realising it yet. This Speyside distillery, nestled at the foot of Ben Rinnes near Aberlour, was designed by William Delmé-Evans – the architect who also planned Tullibardine and Isle of Jura. The vast majority of GlenAllachie’s whisky has gone into the much-loved Chivas Brothers blends, hence why you’re probably already a fan. Now independently owned by The GlenAllachie Distillers Company Limited, a new range of whiskies has begun to emerge, which has scooped them Scottish Whisky Distillery of the Year 2019, World’s Best Single Malt at the 2021 World Whiskies Awards, and more than 50 other awards in just three years. You’re going to want to make space in your collection for GlenAllachie.
