Peated Port Wood Single Malt Scotch Whisky
A limited release from GlenDronach, the Peated Port Wood is a rare smoky whisky from this Highland distillery finished in Port pipes from the Douro Valley, Portugal. This gives the natural colour a pink hue and the nose a wonderfully mellow smoke.
Highland peat is very different from Islay peat. While both are made up of broken down heather, moss and pine, Islay’s also contains bog myrtle, seaweed, sea spray and salty sand, which combine to give the iodine, tar, smoked fish and medicinal notes that the island is so famous for. Highland peat, however, has more bracken and forest matter, which gives peated Highland whisky more of a bonfire and pipe smoke. Mix that wintery woodsmoke with GlenDronach’s Port pipes and you get a warming Single Malt with hedgerow fruit, cherry pie, smoked peppercorns, cranberry and a cream and strawberry jam combo that reminds one rather of scones. Perfect for hunkering down with on a cold night.
GlenDronach’s history has been a tumultuous one. Burned to the ground a decade after it was founded, bounced from hand to hand like a hot potato, mothballed and resurrected, it keeps coming back like the Terminator. However, since being taken under the wing of The Benriach Distillery Company and more recently Brown-Forman, things have settled down in the valley of Forgue, Aberdeenshire. Whisky maker Rachel Barrie has produced a procession of exceptional, richly sherried single malts, with each release displaying even more character than the last. Rachel Barrie’s father is particularly partial to a GlenDronach and she was raised just down the road, so this is one of the first distilleries she ever tasted and one that she is therefore incredibly passionate about.
