Released just before our woodland undergoes its colourful transformation for the year, this new limited-edition Glenmorangie is inspired by the forest and the burgeoning craft gin scene.
“Every time I go into the woods where I live, I notice something new, be it the fragrance of last night’s rainfall or the sound of leaves rustling a particular way,” said Dr. Bill Lumsden (the Director of Whisky Creation at Glenmorangie). “I began to imagine how we could bring the forest to life in a whisky.” So, that’s exactly what he did. Glenmorangie’s A Tale of the Forest was created using barley kilned with woodland botanicals. Kilning is the process of drying and heating the barley after it has been soaked, to stimulate germination. Sometimes this is done with peat, giving rise to deeply smoky and medicinal whiskies like Glenmorangie’s stablemate Ardbeg. But in this case, the process included birch bark, juniper berries and heather flowers, giving rise to an aromatic and verdant style of Scotch. Because the botanicals are used during the kilning stage, this is very much a Single Malt and not a gin.
Matured in ex-Bourbon barrels, A Tale of the Forest is part dram, part walk in the woods. Expect notes of pine needles, woodland moss, eucalyptus, bitter orange, coriander, oak, peppermint, roasted chestnut, gentle wisps of smoke and a little of juniper’s peppery sharpness. You can almost hear the rustle of leaves on the floor and feel the warmth of the sun shining through the canopy above as you sip it.
The stunning box and bottle were designed by the Bangkok-based artist Pomme Chan, evoking the mysterious depth of the forest. All-in-all, we think this is perfect dram to charge the hip flask with before heading out for a woodland adventure. Alternatively, use it to mix a Touchwood (with vermouth, amaro, Pedro Ximénez and black pepper) or a leafy twist on a Rob Roy cocktail.
Glenmorangie is a distillery that needs little or no introduction, seeing as how it’s now a household name, even if it’s sometimes mispronounced. Established in 1843 (although alcohol production may have started as early as 1703), the folk of Tain have passed their skills down from generation to generation. But amidst all that tradition, they’ve never stopped innovating and only Prohibition and World War II have briefly stopped their remarkably tall whisky stills from running.
