Ranked Number 9 in Whisky Advocate’s Top 20 Whiskies of 2019 they awarded Glenmorangie’s Quinta Ruban 92 points and described it as “a symphony of understated opulence”.
The much-loved 12 Year Old version was one of Ian Buxton’s 101 Whiskies To Try Before You Die. But that book will need updating pronto because the 12 Year Old has been replaced with the 14 Year Old Quinta Ruban which gives you a further two years of maturation and stands head and shoulders above its predecessor in our opinion.
Matured initially in Bourbon barrels to smooth out any edges before being finished in hand-selected Ruby Port casks which adds red fruit and mindboggling complexity. Dive in and let your taste buds swim around almond croissants filled with warm marzipan cherry strudel summer pudding plum crumble Seville orange marmalade rose petals pipe tobacco milk chocolate crunchy apples and pears sandalwood honey glazed walnuts and a nostalgic touch of Ribena. A joy to lose yourself in for an hour or so.
Glenmorangie is a distillery that needs little or no introduction seeing as how it’s now a household – if sometimes mispronounced – name. Established in 1843 – although alcohol production may have started as early as 1703 – the folk of Tain have passed their skills down from generation to generation. But amidst all that tradition they’ve never stopped innovating and only Prohibition and World War II have briefly stopped their remarkably tall whisky stills from running.
