Monocultivar Leccino Extra Virgin Olive Oil 500ml
Extra virgin olive oil is fast becoming the new fine wine, with producers establishing the finest terroir and the noble olive varieties, then teasing out masterpieces of immense complexity and character.
Some of the finest examples of this new phenomena are to be found in the Monocultivar range from Gonnelli – each one made from a single variety of olive grown on their very best plots. Launched exclusively in the UK through Harvey Nichols, the Monocultivar Leccino is rather unusually made from black olives. These Leccino olives grown predominantly in Tuscany and pressed within 10 hours of picking give an oil that is wonderfully mellow. This hardy variety produces a fruity extra virgin olive oil with notes of fresh herbs, grass and almonds. And we love it drizzled over risotto, steamed or poached fish, salads and Jersey Royals.
In 1585, the Gonnelli family bought the Santa Téa farm for 300 coins from the local monks. The farm’s mill was built in 1426, so already had a long history of oil making at this stage. There, surrounded by protected forests and nature reserves on the sun-baked plains of Reggello near Florence, the Gonnellis have passed their expertise down through the family, preserving and refining the fine art of olive oil making.
