Meshach Shiraz 2012

98 points, “The 22nd release of Meshach celebrates the great ‘12 Barossa Valley vintage…  A wine of the highest quality in the Olympian class of Barossa Valley Shiraz, seamless, calmly powerful and perfectly balanced.” – James Halliday

Grant Burge’s finest wine. Meshach comes from Shiraz vines that are almost a century old. Intensely powerful with concentrated blackberries, Chambord, plum pudding, cherries, cinnamon-dusted dark chocolate truffles, woody spices, graphite, violets and dried herbs. This is an epic Barossa Shiraz.

As well as that mighty score from James Halliday, this vintage also received a Gold Medal from the Decanter World Wine Awards. Not only that, but Meshach has been rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine. For those not familiar with Langton’s, it’s an auction house that created a classification that has become the honour roll of Australia’s top fine wines, judging wineries on the demand in the market over at least a decade, rather than simply relying on one critic’s opinion on a single tasting.

Meshach Burge was Grant Burge’s great grandfather. He came to Australia from Wiltshire in England at the age of 11, and eventually made the family’s first wines. In his honour, Grant Burge created the wines Shadrach (Cabernet Sauvignon), Meshach (Shiraz) and Abednego (GSM), named after three pilgrims from the Bible who were thrown into a fiery furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar II. Well, it is hot in Australia.

Located in the very beating heart of South Australia’s Barossa Valley, Grant Burge was established in 1988 and has rapidly risen to become a five-star winery according to James Halliday’s Wine Companion. In fact, it has been awarded that elite status for eleven consecutive years. With access to some of the oldest vines in the area, Grant Burge is classic Barossa.
